Economics
What is Economics?
Economics is the study of how individuals, businesses and governments make choices about scarce resources. It explores how decisions are made, why prices change, how markets operate and how economies grow and develop. Economics helps students understand the world around them, from the cost of living and employment opportunities to international trade, sustainability and global economic challenges.
Students learn to think like economists by investigating real-world issues, analysing data and evaluating different solutions to economic problems. They explore how consumers, producers and governments interact, and develop an understanding of both national and global economies
Why do we teach Economics at HASU?
At HASU, we teach Economics because it equips students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to make sense of an increasingly complex world. Economics is relevant to every aspect of life, helping students understand financial decisions, government policies, business behaviour and major global events.
Our curriculum encourages students to become informed, analytical and independent thinkers. Through studying Economics, students develop valuable transferable skills including critical thinking, problem-solving, data interpretation, numerical analysis and evidence-based decision-making. They learn how to construct logical arguments, evaluate different viewpoints and communicate their ideas effectively.
Economics also encourages students to consider important moral, ethical and sustainability issues, helping them become responsible citizens who can engage thoughtfully with contemporary debates. Whether they progress to A Level, university or a wide range of careers including business, finance, law, politics or entrepreneurship, Economics provides an excellent foundation for future success.
At HASU, our aim is to inspire students to be curious about the world, confident in interpreting economic issues and prepared to contribute positively to society as informed decision-makers.
How do we teach Economics at HASU?
At HASU, Economics provides students with a strong understanding of how individuals, businesses and governments make decisions in a world of limited resources. Students explore both national and global economic issues, developing their ability to analyse, interpret and evaluate economic events and policies.
Our curriculum gives students the opportunity to apply economic theory to real-world situations. Through the use of current affairs, case studies and economic data, students investigate issues such as inflation, unemployment, economic growth, globalisation and sustainability. They are encouraged to consider the perspectives of different stakeholders and evaluate the costs, benefits and consequences of economic decisions.
Lessons focus on developing critical thinking, quantitative and analytical skills. Students learn how to interpret graphs and data, construct balanced arguments and make evidence-based judgements. We encourage wider reading and regular engagement with economic news, helping students to become informed, curious and confident thinkers who can understand and debate the economic issues shaping the modern world.
