Medical Support

Medical Support

At HASU, we take great pride in the way that we support the students in our care. We are committed to ensuring that all students with medical needs are fully supported to thrive, achieve and participate safely in every aspect of school life.

What is medical support at Harris Sutton?

We recognise that some students may have short-term or long-term medical conditions that require additional support during the school day. Our aim is to ensure that all students with medical needs feel safe, included and supported to engage fully in learning, enrichment activities and wider school life.
We have robust procedures in place to support students with medical needs and work closely with students, parents and carers, healthcare professionals and external agencies to ensure the right support is in place for each individual. Where appropriate, Individual Healthcare Plans are developed and regularly reviewed to ensure that support remains effective and responsive to changing needs.
Our staff receive appropriate training and guidance where required, enabling them to provide safe and effective support for students with medical conditions. We are committed to removing barriers to participation so that all students can attend school regularly, access learning successfully and take part in educational visits, extracurricular activities and enrichment opportunities.

School trips

If your child takes medication outside of normal school hours, for example in the morning or evening, and is due to attend a residential trip, this medication must still be declared to the school. All relevant medication forms must be completed and medication provided to the school at least one week before departure to allow sufficient time for review, planning and the safe administration of medication throughout the trip. This helps us ensure that appropriate arrangements are in place for the trip.

Working in Partnership

Effective support relies on strong partnerships between home, school and healthcare professionals. We encourage parents/carers to keep us informed of any changes to their child's medical needs as soon as they arise for example including new diagnoses, updates to existing medical conditions, treatment plans, prescribed medication or healthcare advice, so that we can work together promptly to ensure the right support is in place.
