Computer Science & ICT
What is Computer Science?
Computer Science is the study of principles, applications, technologies of computing and how these computer systems work. At Harris Academy Sutton, we also focus on the study and analysis of new and emerging technologies.
Why do we teach Computer Science at HASU?
At Harris Academy Sutton, our Computer Science and IT curriculum has three main aims.
Firstly, we want students to become confident, responsible, and proficient users of technology by developing their digital literacy, online safety awareness, and understanding of how digital systems operate. These essential skills enable students to use hardware and software safely, effectively, and creatively. We also believe it is important that students understand the ethical, legal, cultural, and environmental implications of technology so that they can become responsible digital citizens.
Secondly, we place problem-solving and computational thinking at the heart of our curriculum. Students develop logical reasoning, analytical thinking, and programming skills that enable them to tackle complex challenges and devise innovative solutions. These transferable skills are valuable in every sector of the modern workplace and support students in becoming resilient and independent learners.
Thirdly, we provide students with practical ICT and digital creation skills. Through activities such as spreadsheet modelling, digital design, app and web development, user interface design, data analysis, and multimedia creation, students learn how technology is used in real-world contexts. This prepares them for further study in both Computer Science and Information Technology pathways at Key Stage 4 and beyond.
How do we teach Computer Science?
At Harris Academy Sutton, students have opportunities to work with a wide range of software, programming languages, and digital technologies. Lessons combine theoretical understanding with practical application, allowing students to develop both technical knowledge and real-world digital skills.
Students learn through:
-
Programming and computational problem-solving
-
Practical projects and digital product creation
-
Collaborative learning using Microsoft 365 tools
-
Research and investigation of emerging technologies
-
Testing, evaluation, and refinement of solutions
-
Discussion and analysis of ethical and societal issues
-
Extended written responses that develop analytical and evaluative skills
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that knowledge and skills build progressively from Year 7 through to Key Stage 4. Core concepts are regularly revisited to strengthen long-term retention and deepen understanding. Students are encouraged not only to use technology but also to become creators, designers, and critical thinkers.
Computer Science lessons are delivered in dedicated ICT suites equipped with modern hardware and software. The use of Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, Forms, and OneDrive enables students to work collaboratively and access learning both inside and outside the classroom. Live modelling, guided practice, and independent application help students develop confidence and produce high-quality work.
How does Computer Science change at HASU at Key Stage4?
In key stage 4, students will learn to apply the subject knowledge they acquired throughout key stage 3 in more intricate and logical ways. Study of computer science at KS4 encourages students to develop their understanding and application of the core concepts in computer science. Students also analyse problems in computational terms and devise creative solutions by designing, writing, testing and evaluating programs. Students will encounter questions and scenarios that will challenge them to use their problem-solving skill to the optimum levels.
Students will also be formally introduced to GCSE exam style questions and will have the opportunity to develop their exam techniques including common errors and misconceptions, layout and workings and checking answers.
What exam board do we study at Key Stage 4?
