Health & Social Care

What is Health and Social Care?

Health and social care at HASU equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to develop their employability skills in, and understanding of, the Health and Social care industry. The curriculum is designed to focus on developing sector specific knowledge and technical skills in a practical learning environment.

Students will develop key skills of empathy, communication, and independent learning, which will supply them for future success both in terms of a career and more importantly, in terms of living a healthy, happy life.

Why do we teach Health and Social Care at HASU?

About 3 million people, in the UK, work in health and social care – equivalent to 1 in every 10 people. The demand for both health and social care is likely to continue to rise due to our ageing population, and consequently will continue to play a key role in UK society.

Our KS4 Course provides students with the background knowledge and skills, enabling our students to achieve the qualifications they need to build successful careers in the Health and Social Care sector such as; Teaching, Social work, Nursing and Midwifery and Paramedic science.

How do we teach Health and Social Care at HASU?

Students will have the option of studying Health and Social Care at GCSE as part of our broad and balanced Key Stage 4 curriculum. Health and Social Care provides a wide range of learning experiences which are accessible to students of all abilities. This involves group work opportunities, differentiated tasks, report writing through internal and external assessments.

The internally assessed units are designed to promote deep learning through ensuring the connection between knowledge and practice. Internally assessed components involve the understanding and application of human development, how people deal with life events, health and social care services as well as a practical demonstration of care values. The externally assessed component builds upon this and allows students to interpret and assess an individual's health and wellbeing.

What exam board do we study at Key Stage 4?

Students studying Health and Social Care at HASU follow the Pearson BTEC Tech Award Health and Social Care Specification.
