Academy Admissions

Welcome

Thank you for considering your child, or if you are in Year 11 – yourself - for a place at our Academy. We understand that the transition to secondary school, or moving school to a new sixth-form, can be a daunting time for families and students. We aim to support you through this process as best we can and are always here to discuss any concerns you may have.

We strongly encourage you to visit the Academy before making any final decision. Details of our Open Days and Morning Visits Programme for students and families considering joining us in September 2026 can be found below.

Full details of the admissions process are laid out in our Admissions Policy which can be found at the foot of this page. The process is different for students joining in Year 7, Year 12, and for those wishing to apply for a place outside of the usual transition times.

The Virtual Tour and Principal/Head of Academy’s Speech can be viewed here.

Admission to Year 7

If your child is in Year 6 you will no doubt be very excited about their transfer to Secondary Education next year.  We would be delighted if you were considering applying for them to have a place here at Harris Academy Sutton.

Parents wishing to apply for a place will be able to name Harris Academy Sutton on their Common Application Form (CAF). This is accessed via your Local Authority (LA). Even though we are in the London Borough of Sutton you should still apply using your own LA form.

We offer 195 places each year.

Like all secondary schools, if we are oversubscribed, children with education, health and care plans will be offered the first places. Looked-after and previously looked-after children will have next priority.

After this, our policy is to offer places to students in the following order:

  1. Siblings of children already at the school;
  2. The children of staff who have been recruited to support where there is a shortage of skilled staff;
  3. The children living closest to the school’s site.

Year 7 admissions - key dates

Applications for places will be made in accordance with Local Authority  admission arrangements and will be made on the Common Application Form provided and administered by the Local Authority.

  • 1st September 2024 - Opening date for applications for Year 7 places in Sept 2025
  • 31st October 2024 - Closing date for applications for Year 7 places in Sept 2025
  • 3rd March 2025 - The Local Authority informs parents/carers of allocated school
  • 31st March 2025 (4pm) – Deadline for appeals to be made in writing to the Academy
  • 4th & 5th  June 2025 – Appeal hearings

For Parents/Carers who wish to appeal

Parent/carers wishing to appeal against the Academy’s decision on admissions, should complete an Appeal Form stating the reason  for the appeal based on the published admissions criteria. Appeal Forms are available from the Academy Admissions Manager, Mrs K Palm,  by emailing:

admissions@harrissutton.org.uk?subject=Admissions Appeal

Completed Appeal Forms for Year 7 must be received by the Academy by the closing date shown in key dates above.

Completed forms should be sent for the attention of: Admissions Office, Harris Academy Sutton,  2 Chiltern Road, Sutton, SM2 5RD or emailed to:

admissions@harrissutton.org.uk

The appeal hearing

The appeals will be heard, in private, by an Independent Appeal Panel. The Clerk to the Appeal Panel will make an appointment within a reasonable time. Appeals may be made in English or the parents’/carers’ first language.

Please note that:

  • Only one appeal per application is allowed.
  • Appeals are conducted online, and you may be supported by a friend

The Panel will consist of 3 people (2 will have education experience and one will be an independent person with no education experience).

The panel will consider the case put forward by you and the Academy. They must consider the admission arrangements for the Academy and the reasons why you want to attend that particular school. The panel must exercise its discretion by balancing the weight of your argument (for wanting to attend) against the Academy’s reasons for refusal i.e. the prejudice that one more student would cause to the education of the students already offered and the health and safety of all the students already attending the Academy, also taking into account the Academy's published admission arrangements.

The decision of the Independent Appeals Panel is binding on the admissions authority and the parents.

Information for Secondary Transfer to Year 7: September 2026

Our next Open Evening will be on Thursday, 10th July 2025, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm.
