Additional Maths

Additional Maths can be selected in a GCSE Option Block. Students will study two GCSE courses: Pearson Edexcel GCSE in Statistics and AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Maths. The majority of GCSE Statistics will be taught in Year 10 and Further Maths will be taught in Year 11. Both courses will be examined at the end of Year 11.

GCSE Statistics

Statistics is about making decisions when there is uncertainty. Perhaps one of the most versatile areas of maths, it gives students the skills to collect, analyse, interpret and present data. It complements subjects such as GCSE Biology, Geography and Business.

Students will take the Higher Tier of this course, which includes the following units:

  • The collection of data
  • Processing, representing and analysing data
  • Summarising data: measures of central tendency and dispersion
  • Scatter diagrams and correlation
  • Time series analysis
  • Probability
  • Index numbers
  • Probability distributions

AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Maths

This mathematics qualification which extends the content of GCSE mathematics and gives students a taste of some of the mathematics they will meet at A level. There is a high level of challenge in this course, which includes topics such as Coordinate Geometry, Calculus and Matrix Transformations.
